Freenas expand pool larger disks

Well, the answers to this question will undoubtedly be complex and varied so I will limit my discussion to home or small business systems.

The response I give is based on my experiences in this area. Replacing them to grow the pool size would result in the loss of this investment. It did make sense to me to build a second FreeNAS system with larger disks, but what was I to do with the current system? As time marched on, disk capacities increased and microservers became more powerful, but build costs were very similar. I had increased my pool capacity by 4TB, though my total capacity had increased by 16TB when both servers were considered together.

The question about what to do with the replaced server remained. The answer, of course, is to use this system to back up the primary server. However, the primary server has 16TB of available pool space compared with 12TB of available pool space on the backup server.

It turns out that this is not as problematical as first appears. In my case, that would be when the primary server had reached a pool threshold of I just had to try to squeeze Fast forward to a more recent time, a wiser FreeNAS user and a third system build. Several factors influenced the design of this third server:.

I still found the HP microservers excellent value for money and decided to look at the offering in their newer Generation 8 G8 range, which replaced the NxxL microservers from the G7 range. I had increased my pool capacity by just 2TB, though my total capacity had increased by 18TB when all three servers were considered together. The big advantage now though was that I could backup the full 18TB of the new primary server The major challenge I faced with the new system build was migrating from a five disk system to a four disk system.

A limitation of ZFS is that you cannot expand a pool by adding a disk. You can only grow a pool by replacing ALL disks that the pool is built on with higher capacity disks.Donate to FreeBSD. I want to increase the size of raidz1 pool I tried to do it in VM, but without success What am I doing wrong? Installed system is: Code:. FreeBSD freenas. Check the autoexpand property on the pool. And consider the -e switch for the import. Searching the forums for either of the bolded options would have found you a recent thread with the solution.

Working solutions are here: search forum "General" by keyword "autoexpand" that works for me: Code:. You must log in or register to reply here. Do note that certain hypervisor features are unavailable when doing so — taking VMware for example, where you will lose fault tolerance, HA, DRS, snapshots, and a few more. Note that the following procedure applies to FreeNAS 9.

Log into your FreeNAS web administration portal. By detaching this volume, we can safely perform partition changes to disk s within. Grow vDisks using whatever means available — vboxmanage, vmkfstools, vmware-vdiskmanager, etc. Retrieve the name s of partitions for each pool. One of these partitions will correlate to the disk s expanded. Resolves a partition name to drive name Components column.

NOTE down the Components name for the partition identified previously — we will use this later. Replace da0 with drive name Components name identified previously. This command will resize the specified disk.

Return back to your FreeNAS shell, and enter this final command to both bring the device online, and automatically update the pool size. Replace poolname with the component name from zpool status.

Replace some-long-gptid with the partition name from glabel status. This of course, will also be reflected in any shares active. This worked nicely — thanks. My FreeNAS setup appears to be It was a little more complex than this guide as I had two drives for storage — as an emergency stopgap lasted a couple of years! I had added a second storage drive using as much space as I could on the host; easier than expanding the disk!

I have enough hard disk space 4x2TB for a few years, but if down the road I want to expand this out can i build another 4xHD pool? Would i need separate datasets for this second volume or can i just expand the existing ones?

Is replacing disks to grow a ZFS pool viable on FreeNAS?

You have various options. I'm assuming here that you have the 4 disks arranged as a raidz1 like raid5 layout. Not ideal, but I won't go into discussions about the best disk layout. You can't change the number of disks. Sign up to join this community. The best answers are voted up and rise to the top. Asked 7 years, 1 month ago.

Adding a new vdev in ZFS terms. The new vdev should ideally be the same type as the first, so if you first 4 disks are set as raidz1, the next four should be as well. You can make a new, independent pool out of the new disks.

Or do separate vdevs have separate datasets? Dave you can go either way. File system data is contained within a zpool, which is comprised of vdevs a raidz set is a type of vdev. A system can have multiple zpools, zpools can have multiple vdevs. So it's a whole lot of "how you want to configure it depends on what you want out of it now and later". I tend to keep zpools to a single vdev, so separate zpools for each set of disks, as it's easy to expand things, but you can't shrink at least not easily.

A new vdev will just expand the available space to the pool. Datasets are not constrained to one vdev, their data is stored wherever ZFS can find in the pool to put it. This is the main concept of 'pooled' storage. The zpool merges X number of disks into a pool, which just becomes one big storage area for ZFS file systems to put data records. What's new New posts New resources Latest activity. Joined Dec 17, Messages Currently i have a single 10TB hdd in stripe. The plan is to expand and extend the Pool. Here is how i thought i might do it. I just want to know if ist possible. Is this reasoninig correct?

Is this possible. Or in order to extend my Pool without having to backup data, is something that cant really be done? Becuase it is easy to back up whole 30 TB to a single hdd, and then create a new pool from 30TB hdd and copy the backup to the new pool. Or are there any other strategies, for expanding a pool without having the Need to backup the Information that it contains? Joined Oct 27, Messages 2, If the single device fails, you lose your pool. If you start with a mirror, when you expland you must add another mirror in order to keep redundancy.

So i Need to have a RaidZ volume, in order to add many more drives, which means i Need at least 3 drives to start with. PhoneGap Desktop starts a small web server to host your project and returns a server address you can then enter into the PhoneGap Developer app running on your mobile device or in your desktop browser. You can leverage your desktop browser to preview and test yours apps first to speed up your initial development process. For instance, if you're using a framework like Angular or React, there are tools available for specifically debugging those frameworks in the browser that can be quite helpful before moving over to a device.

Recently PhoneGap began supporting the browser platform as a target automatically to help you test with the deviceready event and Apache Cordova core plugins more easily in an environment you're already familiar with. In the previous step we created a project and ensured it was running by looking for the green play button to be highlighted and a green bar showing the server address it's running on at the bottom of the PhoneGap Desktop.

The screenshot is shown again below for reference. Locate the specific server address for your project before moving to the next step. Go to your mobile device where the PhoneGap Developer App is running, enter the server address on the main screen and tap Connect. You should see the connection occur followed by a success message as shown below. If you receive an error of any kind, ensure once again that you are connected to the same network on both your device and computer.

You could also check the issue tracker and PhoneGap Google Groups list for further help. Once the PhoneGap Developer app connects, it will load and display your application as shown below:Now let's make an update to some code to see how easy it is to test a change. Using your favorite text editor, open up the index. Let's start by changing the PHONEGAP text that's displayed in the app from PhoneGap to Hello PhoneGap. Save it when you're finished and move on to the next step.

Now check your mobile device where the PhoneGap Developer app is running and you will see your application reload and automatically display the new text: At this point you should check out this guide explaining important details about the default Hello PhoneGap application and mobile application development tips with PhoneGap in general. Find out how to install PhoneGap, then create and preview an app on your device almost as fast as a robot could do it.

Preview in a Desktop Browser You can leverage your desktop browser to preview and test yours apps first to speed up your initial development process.

Refer to the PhoneGap Browser Support Reference guide for specific details. Double check to ensure you're running your device and computer on the same network before continuing.

NOTE: Tap directly on the server address displayed in the terminal screen of the PhoneGap Developer app to change it to match yours.
